Job Description REGISTERED NURSE PICU SITE OF SERVICE: Portsmouth Naval Base, VA POSITION OVERVIEW: Performs workplace industrial hygiene surveys assessing all occupational, environmental, and radiological health hazards. Provide technical data and completed forms/documentation to staff for inclusion into occupational/environmental/radiological health program files. Enter data into DOEHRS-IH in accordance with local procedures and requirements. POSITION QUALIFICATION/REQUIREMENTS: Education: Minimum of Associate’s Degree in Nursing Accreditation: Graduate from a college or university accredited by Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Cardiac Certifications: Must have the following hands-on certification through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross · Basic Life Support (BLS) · Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification · Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification · Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification. · Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Labs, and Emotional Support (S.T.A.B.L.E.). Experience: One year of experience within the last two years as registered nurse. Additional: N95 particulate respirator duckbill mask fitting License: Current, full, active, and unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse. U.S. Citizenship: Shall be a U.S. citizen English Language Requirement: Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers. Physical Capability: Shall be physically capable of standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time and physically capable of performing all services required under the contract. DUTIES: · Perform a full range of RN duties in accordance with assignment under the task order, including triage; patient assessment and monitoring; use of patient monitoring and treatment equipment; appropriate nursing care, procedures, and treatments; execution of physicians’ orders within the guidelines of standard nursing practice; documentation of patient care and observations; and patient education and emotional support · RN (PICU) – In addition to the duties listed under 5.2.1.2.8., the following additional duties are required: 1. Render professional intensive nursing care to critically ill pediatric patients with medical and/or surgical conditions within the PICU. Continually assess condition of patients for potential or lifethreatening crises. Identify and address deviation from baseline vital signs, assessments and laboratory tests. Document, report and follow through on abnormal findings with physicians/nurses. 2. Recover both stable and unstable pediatric patients from general and regional anesthesia and deep sedation. 3. Interact professionally with patient/family and involve patient/family in the formation of the plan of care. Make appropriate referrals to meet short- and long-term goals in preparation for patient discharge. 4. Consult other services as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs. Order diagnostic and therapeutic services as directed. 5. Demonstrate knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and the patient’s clinical condition. Administer a wide variety of rapid-acting, highly potent medications (direct intravenous and other routes) according to unit policies, procedures, and protocols. Use a broad knowledge of drugs and intravenous therapy, including properties, indications, dosages/rates and side effects. Closely monitor and document patient response and adjust therapy accordingly. 6. Be knowledgeable and observant in recognizing signs of abuse/neglect and take appropriate action following NMCP policies/guidelines. Demonstrate an understanding of diagnosis and treatment regimens in relation to the medical plan of care. Ensure prompt and accurate implementation of physician orders for quality outcomes. Provide RN coverage when warranted for medical transports to retrieve critically ill children from other health care facilities for the purpose of receiving care at NMCP. 7. Operate, troubleshoot, and monitor the performance of sophisticated equipment used in the care of critically ill patients, including but not limited to: mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, cardiac monitors, etc. Interpret and respond to complex technological data generated by such equipment. Maintain passwords and access to essential equipment required to carry out nursing duties. 8. Assist the privileged providers with examinations, treatments, and procedures. 9. Provide emotional support or make appropriate referral for patients and significant others. 10. Assess patient for emotional and social impact of illness or hospitalization. 11. Assess and recognize cultural beliefs about illness and health care of ethnic groups that are significantly represented. 12. Provide constructive and timely input to the supervisor on orientation appraisals of nonprivileged providers and staff who provide patient care services. 13. Assist in the communication of new or modified hospital policies and procedures to personnel thoroughly and promptly. 14. Consult other departments as appropriate to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities. 15. Perform routine unit duties independently without specific instructions. Information is obtained from the nurse on the previous shift. 16. Complete appropriate skills inventory/competency checklists and appropriate training materials in a timely manner. Provide Government with appropriate documentation upon completion. 17. Keep current in continuing education programs for the improvement of patient care and maintain current nursing practice by attending seminars, programs or workshops for continuing education and by reviewing pertinent literature. Provide evidence of active participation to Government in way of training certificate, membership card, or other form of acceptable documentation. HOURS: Shifts normally are scheduled for 12 hours periods. 06:45-19:15 and 18:45-07:15 On Call coverage is minimum of one shifts every 12 weeks. Base Down Days: During a planned closure of the facility due to training, closures before or after holidays family down days, Employee will only be compensated for the actual hours worked. If clinic is closed and employee is not able to work, employee will be required to use leave or take LWOP (without penalty). SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS Must be comfortable in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. Must be able and willing to reprioritize on short notice and work on multiple simultaneous projects. Flexible and able to work with various personalities. Teamwork skills required. Time management skills required. The ability to meet deadlines in a deadline intensive environment is essential. High level of adaptability and willingness to embrace change in a fast-paced, demanding environment.
