Programs team resides in the larger, Learning and Community
Engagement department. This team of museum professionals and
educators are tasked with creating and delivering meaningful,
dialogic and engaging educational programs and experiences to
students and learners through onsite tours, programs, virtual
learning and classroom outreach. Through collaboration with the
Human Resources and Professional Development team, School Programs
leads our youth volunteer efforts aimed at the "Middle School"
audience typically aged 12-14. This is an introduction to community
service, public speaking, civic engagement, advocacy and soft skill
building for teens. Job Duties This research internship will be
laying the groundwork for the development of a new youth volunteer
opportunity. Based on interest, the intern will be researching
either oyster cultivation history in the Tidewater region or
exploring natural plants related to Virginia, England, and West
Central Africa and how these plants/crops led to the development of
the “American” cuisine. This background research should include
information on the specific topics as well as primary sources that
reference different environmental settings. Once research is
finalized, the intern will either work with staff to develop out
aspects of the training class or work on turning portions of the
research into activities that can be done with the general public.
This position will also assist staff in the training of the youth
volunteers who will be delivering the new program to a public
audience. Minimum Qualifications Strong communication skills to
include: Written, Oral and Active Listening Understanding of
current teaching methodologies Knowledge of educational program
writing and development Strong research skills Experience working
with Microsoft 360 Skilled at public speaking and engagement Prior
experience working with school age children Additional
Considerations Must be currently enrolled in or have recently
completed at least 1 year in a higher education or a skilled trade
